COLOR STUDY: The Year for Blue Hues

Following Sherwin-Williams’ announcement of its 2020 Color of the Year, a bold navy blue called Naval, Pantone named Classic Blue as its Color of the Year for 2020. It’s no surprise that these blue shades were selected as colors of the year. One of the calmest colors in the spectrum, blue is a world-wide favorite, evocative of the sea and sky, offering classic appeal in all areas of design.

Blue’s range of hues offers so much diversity, simultaneously bringing us the depths of the ocean along with the light and airiness of clouds above. Blue stands for integrity, trust, power, tranquility, and health. Beneficial for both mind and body, the color blue promotes healing and understanding and can help us turn to a more mindful temperament. Reliable and familiar blue is a calming color we turn to in times of unease.

For interior designers and their customers, classic blues are a welcome return to calming, relaxing tones that are universally embraced.

When it comes to blue hues, GIO’s got you covered.  Let’s take a look at some of our tile offerings from the blue spectrum.

With our new ROMBO floor and wall line, you can create a range of cool pattern options. The tiles are available in four moody hues in antiqued gloss or matte finishes, including two beautiful blues, Cobalt and Sky.

GIO Looks at the Latest in Tile Trends for Walls

For many commercial interior designers, specifying tile as a wall covering is a no-brainer. The advantages of tile over paint, wallpaper, wood, brick, and many other materials for walls in commercial settings are many. Tiles are extremely durable, easy to clean and maintain, hygienic, fireproof, and resistant to fading, moisture, and odors. Tile is also environmentally friendly (tile emits no VOCs, doesn’t require the use of caustic cleaners, and doesn’t require the destruction of other natural resources like wood or plant material), and is quite cost-effective when you consider the life cycle and long-term performance. Then there are the looks. Tile design technology has come a long, long way from the vanilla looks of yesteryear. The vast array of colors, patterns, and designs available now allow designers to put texture or patterns on walls that rival the detail of many traditional wall covering materials. Here’s a look at some of our latest and greatest tile styles for achieving fashion-forward looks with the performance characteristics your commercial design projects demand.

Exciting, New Wood Looks

Wood looks for walls in commercial settings have been around for a while now—long enough to have transcended trend status. And while wood look-alikes have become increasingly more realistic (so realistic that even touching them often does not reveal their porcelain secret), tile designers are constantly reimagining and designing new wood looks to bring us renditions that go beyond the realistic and traditional. Artful, edgy designs in wood-look tiles offer the back-to-nature warmth we crave with something new and unexpected. Our new Char is a perfect example, with its look of singed timber awash in a metallic sheen. Char is available in three generous plank sizes and five authentic hues.

3D Illusions

The look of a three-dimensional geometric surface is not new; this form of trompe l’oeil (which has been around since Greek and Roman times) was very popular for floors during the reign of Louis XIV. It was known as parquetry or sometimes even referred to as “Louis cubes.” These optical illusion-style floors became popular again during the Art Nouveau period that began in France in the early 20th Century. It’s the Art Deco revival going on now that’s responsible for the trend resurfacing, this time for both floors and walls. Our new Canvas in Cube or Polygon mosaics answers to this trend to create big wow factors in both retro and modern design schemes.

Fabric Inspired Tiles

What better way to add texture to walls than with fabric? Well, there is a better and far more durable way for commercial interiors, and that’s with textile look porcelain tile. Not only do these tiles look like fabric, if you touch them, you’ll feel the textile-like texture. Check out our Plush collection in a spectrum of lush neutrals and a range of sizes.

Handcrafted Subway Tiles

While always a classic, traditional subway tiles may not be at the top of everyone’s design wishlist these days—unless they offer a twist. Handcrafted subway tiles (or tiles that look handcrafted) have subtle imperfections that give an appealing warmth to a space.  The hand-molded subway tile–nuanced hues and elongated dimensions of our Lustro collection offer the best of both trendy and classic worlds.
